Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, Neue Galerie New York
Exhibition designer Federico DeVera had a vision, and it was one of the most enjoyable challenges of my career to help him realize it. Challenges included: designing wall texts to fit precisely into a hand-drawn cartouche at the exhibition entrance; producing a Messerschmidt graphic that was as tall as a wall; and creating custom graphic embellishments to fill our window boxes using images that were technically too low-res to fill the space. An added bonus: I was selected to write the text for the didactic panels in the exhibition.
Vienna 1900: Style and Identity, Neue Galerie New York
When mounting an exhibition about art in turn-of-the-century Vienna, the installation design needs to be as on-point as the design philosophy of the period. Challenges included designing nearly 200 artwork labels; creating custom vinyl wallpaper designs; matching didactic panel backgrounds to precise paint colors; and intensive retouching of a historical map to show the reach of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
